Improving Content ID

In the nearly five years since we launched Content ID, it has helped everyone from large media companies to up-and-coming creators manage their content when it appears on YouTube. More than 3,000 content owners have supplied more than 500,000 hours of reference files to the system. Content ID hasn’t stood still over the last five years. We’ve been rolling out regular updates and we want to highlight three particular efforts that we think improve Content ID for everyone.

A New Appeals Process
Users have always had the ability to dispute Content ID claims on their videos if they believe those claims are invalid. Prior to today, if a content owner rejected that dispute, the user was left with no recourse for certain types of Content ID claims (e.g., monetize claims). Based upon feedback from our community, today we’re introducing an appeals process that gives eligible users a new choice when dealing with a rejected dispute. When the user files an appeal, a content owner has two options: release the claim or file a formal DMCA notification.

Smarter Detection of Unintentional Claims
Content owners have uploaded more than ten million reference files to the Content ID system. At that scale, mistakes can and do happen. To address this, we’ve improved the algorithms that identify potentially invalid claims. We stop these claims from automatically affecting user videos and place them in a queue to be manually reviewed by the content owner. This process prevents disputes that arise when content not owned by a partner inadvertently turns up in a reference file.

Smarter claim detection minimizes unintentional mistakes. Of course, we take action in rare cases of intentional misuse, up to and including terminating Content ID access.

Improved Matching Quality
At the heart of Content ID is the matching technology that identifies partners’ content among all the videos on YouTube. Earlier this year we introduced a significant improvement to how the matching happens. We continue to work on ways to make the matching more precise through better algorithms and a more comprehensive reference library.

There is still a lot of work ahead of us, but we believe that these are significant steps forward in our efforts to keep YouTube a vibrant place where the rights of both content owners and users are protected and everyone can control their original content and make money from it - money which can be put towards the production of more great content.

For now, keep on watching, upload a video or two and please, please keep the feedback coming.

  3. Id love the ability to appeal copyright notices after the account is (in my opinion) wrongly suspended. Lost millions of views and thousands of subscribers.

  4. Ignore my last comment on YouTube-global. I do like Improvements I really hope you can improve more like Twitter does a lot with their community.

In my opinion, I want to be able to get one of my YouTube accounts Flamingechoes reopened. and I don't want to send a trademark complaint since It might not work once I get the email. but Is there anyway I can contact to get one of my channels reopened and linked again. In my opinion having closed accounts and making them unavailable means only YouTube can see the videos and not the users who uploaded them. But I hope you can get more staff members to fix some stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I only hope that this will fix the problem that the YouTube content ID system has with automatically detecting recordings of pieces that are in the public domain.

An extra point, the information page about the appeals process states "OR send a legal copyright notification. In this event, the video will be taken down and the uploader will receive a copyright strike." How does this relate to the copyright holders' current ability to leave the video up while displaying ads on it? If the uploader does not appeal the copyright claim, can the copyright holder leave ads on it, but if the uploader appeals the only solution is to have the video taken down completely?

  6. Youtube problem is also youtube itself not third parties, they are playing "lawyer" and defending third party without even caring about their own users.

I got a FALSE copyright strike, i dispute it and what happens? this happen "Removed (copyright strike). Counter-notification denied" youtube didn't even BOTHER to process my dispute and when i asked why this is the pathetic response

    Based on the information you
have provided, it appears that you do not have the necessary rights to
post the content on YouTube. Therefore, we regretfully cannot honor this
counter-notification. It has not been forwarded to the original
claimant, and we will not be able to restore your video.

So now I'm stuck since my dispute is denied by youtube itself even though I'm 100% sure my video is protected under fair use, My main account gets 8-9 million views monthly and I'm a full partner so if someone considered "big" like me according to people can not do anything then you can only imagine how trouble normal users face

Youtube need to step up and make it simple or POSSIBLE to avoid such problems.

    1. It's easy if it worked correctly, but it seems they deal with a lot of such cases and not enough humans to process them all, they make a lot of human errors and if they did you are stuck.

A dispute between me and a third party about a false copyright and as i provided not youtube refuse to actually process it but even refuse to send my dispute to the third party according to their email because it "appears" to them that i might not be allowed aka they are playing lawyer

Did you people even read the provided link by youtube in this very same topic? here what it says

"Who is eligible to appeal rejected disputes?

Uploaders in good copyright standing may be able to appeal up to three disputed Content ID matches that were reviewed and rejected at a time."

AKA if a false content ID is "detected" only you have a standing chance, but if the content ID holder decided to copyright strikes you then your appeal end here and you are at dead end,

Another problem is once you get copyright striked this very same appeal does not work since it clearly says in order to appeal you have to be in "good standing" 1 copyright strike on you even if it's false you will not be in good standing anymore.

Basically youtube created a big loop and anyone who got half a brain feels insulted by this topic itself since youtube pretend here as if they are doing us a favor or something

I appreciated a company that basically says "we don't care" over a company that do not care but pretend they do for whatever reason.

    2. Thank you for your comment, but i already tried your suggestion but it wont work, it seems unless you are partnered with big network youtube would not response to you if they made a human error, everything else will be automatic response they wont recheck what was already "checked" to them

  8. The whole copyright (protect ourselves) thing is out of control. I posted a video at the tail end of a burial for a fallen US Air Force soldier. As part of standard operating procedures, taps was played after the 21 gun salute. Since some lame, obscure group(s) did a rendition of "Taps", which by the way was written in 1862 my video is tagged as possibly in violation of copyright. So why should the onus be on me to dispute this ridiculous copyright claim.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeah, I have the same thing happen all the time. I occassionally record videos of myself playing classical pieces (which are in the public domain, just like Taps is), and I get these bs "music publishing rights collecting societies" like Harry Fox Agency claiming that it is copyright infringement.

It doesn't seem like the current change will fix this problem, but I suppose we'll see as time goes on.

      Delete
    2. Who do you think the onus should be on? Naturally if I own content I want to be able to have copyright claims go out on videos that potentially use my content. If it's a mistake or you have the rights to use the content, then you need to submit your proof. It only makes sense.

      Delete
    3. Josh, I don't know if you're talking to me or Bruce, but I'll put in my opinion.

The automatic detection system should take no automatic ACTION. Instead, the detection should be sent to the copyright holder (or someone given permission to act on their behalf, like Harry Fox does for music) to confirm that it is an infringement. If they confirm it, then the relevant action (a take-down, ads, etc.) should be taken.

Once the copyright holder says yes, it's infringing, then the uploader should be notified and given the chance to dispute it. If they dispute it (claiming fair use, that they had already obtained the copyright holder's permission, or that the content they used was NOT really under that holder's copyright) and are found to be right (i.e., they did not infringe), it should be a strike against the copyright holder. 10 strikes within a 1 year period and that copyright holder cannot make any copyright action for a period of 1 year (outside of legal court action).

  9. Hassan56 - you're right. I had a similar issue with a DMCA claim. But remember that you are perfectly entitled to file a counter DMCA as many times as you like. If they are playing silly buggers, so can you. Every time YouTube reject your counter notification, file it again. And again. And again and again and again.

But yes. That (semi?)automated rejection needs to be removed. It's not YouTube's job to decide whether your counter notification is legally admissible. That's a judge's job. When they receive your counter notification they should pass it on and take their hands off your video. The dispute has then been escalated to a higher authority, and it is no longer any of their business. That is precisely why the Safe Harbor provisions are in the DMCA law.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. i cannot file it again. there is no recourse for me. the "company" that supposedly made a claim against two of my videos no longer even exists. and yet youtube would not even process my counter-claim. if i do a video against calvinism for instance, a calvinist can go through my videos and try and find something to make a claim against and potentially shut my channel down. youtube will not even verify is the claim is by the authentic copyright holder. then to make matters worse, and more unfair they will not even process my counter-claim. this behavior by youtube is absolutely disgusting and completely unjust

Unfortunately, this video is not available in Germany because it may contain music for which GEMA has not granted the respective music rights.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Unfortunately there still doesn't seem to be an option for "I don't own the rights to the content, but neither does the claimant" which is what I've been sitting on for ages. I made a video which could be considered fair use at the time. Rights were sold, and then the new rights owner started filing DMCA claims retroactively. But I cannot dispute it, because I can only do so by asserting that I do own the rights, rather than that they don't.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I don't believe this for one second.

I've been a partner since 2008 and had ContentID match a symphonic piece I own a commercial license to a 1974 disco tune. Even though I disputed the match and provided documentation to YouTube, EMI, and Warner Chappell, they rejected my dispute. I am a partner in good standing with no strikes. I have no appeal right in the case. You can read more here and see letters to YouTube, EMI, and Warner Chappell.

  13. I often film public events in public places where music sometimes is played more or less nearby by third parties. That is, the music is in the public environment and not my "fault". I can do _nothing_ about it. Of course, all the environment sounds find their way into to soundtrack of my video--and my videos get penalized. This cannot be correct. Surely this must fall under fair use. If anything, the (eventual) copyright owner should have to investigate (in whatever way they wish, but without my help) whether that third party has rights to play the music publically, but I, or my videos, should not be affected at all. Will this problem be addressed by youtube?

    ReplyDelete
  14. So how long should a review take? My video of my last holiday that I filmed myself, with music that my wife composed and played, was flagged, and I provided evidence that we own all the rights, has been "under review" for about three months now. I have no recourse, apparently.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Update - after three months of my video being "under review", I removed the monetisation altogether, and re-monitised it from scratch, one minute later.

One day later it was reviewed and approved for advertising.

Coincidence? Perhaps. Whatever. If you have the same problem, I would recommend you try that as well.

Let's face it, google/youtube doesn't seem to have "real" people to respond to you, so we have to play with the robots instead.

  16. Still no option to click on to say that a video was misidentified just like before, especially in the case of gameplay footage that was claimed by the wrong folks, instead of by the intended copyright owner (the game publisher).

In this case, you're protesting a mistake in the Content ID system, and not about ownership/rights of said material.

This is known to happen when others sample someone's voice in a music track, put it through the Content ID system, and then your voice gets copyrighted and perhaps erased over the entire Internet.

Plus there are cases with Adobe After Effects projects being mistaken for stage lighting on other videos. I'd say the Content ID system needs more work.

  25. I’m sorry but your system is a joke. In my personal account I've had multiple uploads recently of a pieces written between 1899 and 1901, yes 111-113 years ago, nailed by HFA and UMPG Publishing, neither of which have any claim to these unarranged pieces. Clearly your system is SERIOUSLY flawed. Your system needs to have a system whereby when false claims are made they are strikes AGAINST the claimants and if they reach a certain threshold they get banned and that will solve the false claims. If HFA, UMPG, and others know they get kicked for making false claims then they will make fewer of them.

    ReplyDelete
  26. OK, your so-called "Smarter Detection of Unintentional Claims" and so-called "Improved Matching Quality" is a serious joke and Google/YouTube should be embarrassed. The latest "matched content" include a work by Richard Wagner from 1840, 2 works by Elgar from 1899, a work by Enesco from 1901, and a work from Offenbach from 1880. The claims made by these 3rd parties must carry penalties. If you claim I'm a criminal and make that claim in public that's either slander or liable depending on how the claim is made (writing or verbal). HFA, GoDigital, and UMPG Publishing have all laid claim to works well over 100 years old. They must be penalized for making such claims and if they're unable to give you accurate lists of what is legal they should lose their "rights" under any copyright law. I'm betting a court would toss these claims in seconds and fine the companies making these claims. When YouTube blogs about how it's going to police the companies claiming Public Domain works are theirs I'll be impressed, until then this blog is just a PR stunt used in an vain attempt to silence the justified complaints against your obviously flawed system.

  28. YouTube,

    Explain this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvixAQse1ho

When I uploaded this your CID system IMMEDIATELY claimed that my video "may contain musical compositions administered by: One or more music publishing rights collecting societies". You have to know I did this deliberately to "test" your supposedly improved CID system. The joke is on you as this was created by a computer using a small portion of J.S. Bach's 272 year old Art of the Fugue. Your system allows for, and I might say encourages, copyright trolls that must be stomped out. Furthermore, tell us who these "music publishing rights collecting societies" are. If they are not afraid of their false claims they should have no problem announcing who they are. I'm sure a lot of lawyers would love to know who to contact regarding the false claims.

The problem is I'll bet next week's paycheck no a single person from Google or YouTube even reads these posts let alone will contact me to explain why LEGAL uploads are regularly flagged in this manner. I have dozens upon dozens of other arrangements of 100+ year old music in the Public Domain that I believe I'll render in Sibelius and publish in the same manner. Listing each and every one marked by a copyright troll and posting the links here until you explain why the trolls aren't punished as your normal users are.
